About joining the choir

We encourage singers to come to one of our open rehearsals to experience the choir. If you would like to come to an open rehearsal please contact Julie, our Membership secretary.

Frequently asked questions about joining the choir

Yes of course. We hold open rehearsals at various times in the year and anyone is welcome. This is the perfect way to find out more about the choir. Please contact the membership secretary for details. 

We encourage prospective singers to attend one or two open rehearsals to get to know the choir.  We will then ask you if you would like to audition to become a member. If you do, please submit an application form. We will then arrange an audition at a mutually convenient date.  

Rehearsals are currently held on Thursday evenings, from 7.30 to 9.30 pm, in the Junior School Hall at Bristol Grammar School BS8 1SR. We rehearse from September to June, with breaks at Christmas, Easter and school half-term holidays.

The Choir performs a wide repertoire of sacred and secular music from the 16th Century to the present day, with an emphasis on the music of J S Bach and 20th/21st century composers.

Yes, an ability to sight-read at a reasonable level is necessary.

We expect singers to attend rehearsals regularly and to participate in our 4 concerts each season. There is an additional rehearsal on the Monday before each concert and an afternoon dress rehearsal on the day of a concert.

Members pay an annual subscription as a contribution to rehearsal and professional costs. If you join partway through a season the subscription is charged at a pro rata rate. If you are in receipt of means tested income support, we offer a 50% reduction in membership subscriptions. Financial support from the Alan Farnill Fund is available for new singers who are students or are at the start of their working career.

Music is provided for a charge, although some can be hired at a minimal cost.
